Looks like the artist used as the background, then didn’t make the white areas white.

WOOPS – I accidentally slid a command in there, Add transparent between “used” and “as”. ☺

What I was going to suggest is that the artist saved the file as a png rather than a jpg, and when they were making the image presumed the white they saw from the lowest layer would remain instead of being ignored in the png save.

But seeing as they apparently stole the image, we’re now at a different “work” flow situation.
